Dear Parents and Guardians, My name is Ms. Chateau and this is my third year with Detroit Service Learning Academy. I graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo with my Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education with a focus on Social Studies and Science. I am currently pursuing my Master's Degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. I love to travel and am excited to be teaching World Geography again this year. Curious about what your student will be learning? The seventh grade social studies curriculum is aimed to help students gain an awareness of the places and cultures around the world. We will cover 6 world regions: The United States and Canada, Latin America, Europe and Russia, Africa, Asia, and Oceania and Antarctica. The students will complete mapping labs and debate important global issues. The primary text we will be using is titled Geography Alive! Regions and People. It creatively challenges students to use the tools of geography to view, analyze, and understand the world around them. The seven mapping labs and the program’s case-study approach turn students into geographic thinkers. As an additional benefit, the curriculum has been carefully designed to build students’ content area reading skills. To ensure your child’s success, ask to see his or her class work and homework. Be aware of what your student is learning. I am looking forward to a productive and enjoyable school year working with you and your child! Thank you in advance for your support in your child’s education, Ms. Chateau |
