Character Education
"Character counts"
This year at the Detroit Service Learning Academy we have incorporated a character education program into our daily schedule. The program is called “Character Counts” This program is based on 6 pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Each month classes focus on one pillar in the classrooms. Students are involved in activities and teachers read books that relate to each pillar. At the end of each month teachers choose one student who represents that particular pillar: these students are honored at a grade level character assembly.
Check In, Check Out at DSLA
Students learn accountability for their choices
This program matches students to adult mentors in the school to provide positive reinforcement and guidance for a successful day. Students check in with mentors on a daily basis to receive a scorecard and establish goals for the day, such as completing work, getting along with others or following directions. During the day, students' classroom teachers monitor and score students' progress toward meeting the day's goals. Then at the end of the day, the students check out with their mentors to discuss achievement and next steps. Rewards are seen in behavior improvement and wise choices the students choose to make.
Future Leaders Become Role Models
In an effort to extend our student involvement Elementary Academy Future Leaders has been established. The Future Leaders include students in grades 3-5 who demonstrate responsibility, trustworthiness and exemplary conduct. Members are involved in various school and community activities and much more.
"G" Status Program Encourages Good Character
The Gator Status Program encourages positive behavior among students in grades K-5. The purpose of this program is to encourage students to adhere to the rules and regulations of the academy, as well as, set positive examples for their peers. These students are selected and recognized by their teachers each month within their classrooms. They receive special recognition at monthly assemblies and special privileges during their reign. Some of these special privileges could include: lunch with the administrator, movie day, computer day, Fiesta Friday and Hat Day.
