No Child Left Behind!
The Detroit Service Learning Academy takes pride in servicing all students and is especially proud of the progress that has been made within its Special Education department with students. The model that is practiced at the Detroit Service Learning Academy is that of “full inclusion,” which encourages General Education and Special Education teachers to work together for the common good of all students. The Special Education teachers collaborate with the General Education teachers within the general education classroom setting to reach all students. In addition, the Special Education teachers conduct small group sessions to reinforce concepts taught during general education classes.
Our Special Education Department consists of a Special Education Director, School Social Worker, Speech and Language Therapist, Psychologist, seven Special Education teachers, and five Special Education Paraprofessionals.
The Detroit Service Learning Academy determines theexistence of a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) by using a four part process, identifying a Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses (PSW) called the Aptitude Achievement Consistency Model which is based on the Cattell Horn-Carroll Theory (CHC). A more detailed approach to this model can be accessed through the Wayne County
RESA website.
ACADEMIC GAMES
Academic Games are a series of games designed to test a student's knowledge in several different subject areas. Students compete in games that cover Math, English, Social Studies and Logic. The primary purpose of Academic Games is to make learning fun for students. All too often, it seems students turn off to math, English or Social Studies because the students are bored or not challenged by the material. Acadmic Games help to alleviate that problem by challenging students to pursue their own education in these subjects in order to succeed in the competition.
Everybody Can Read
The purpose of the Everybody Can Read program is to provide a learning environment that will foster reading success for students who are having a difficult time meeting classroom and grade level standards. It is a computer reading program that provides the technology to teach reading to students in an engaging, self-paced manner. Everybody Can Read uses the computer as a tool to help students enhance their reading ability and comprehension skills and to learn to read the same stories and textbooks as their classmates are reading. The software utilized in the program is compatible with the Open Court curriculum being used in both the Primary and Elementary Academies. The students enrolled in the Everybody Can Read Program work on the same stories as their classmates in an innovative way. Ms. Hicks, second from the right, instructor for Everybody Can Read.
